Avengers Endgame Annihilates Massive Record Opening

Marvel/Disney

The numbers are in and as reported, Avengers: Endgame has officially shattered another massive record this weekend. The film grossed an estimated $350M this weekend, easily topping the box office, and surpassing Infinity War's opening weekend of $257M to become the highest opening weekend of all time. The film averaged over 75K per theater and was screened in over 4,662 (Another record: Widest release) theaters. Worldwide, Avengers: Endgame opened to a total of $1.2B with $859M being oversees. So there you have it, as expected many records were broken this weekend but I don't know if anyone expected this movie to have a $350M domestic and $1.2B worldwide opening. Insane to say at the least but it if any movie had the potential to open this big, Endgame seemed like the best bet. So with these records broken, the question is where does the movie go from here? Obviously there's reasons to believe this movie will surpass Avatar or even hit the $3B mark but for now let's just wait and see how this movie plays out. Titanic's worldwide total could be in danger though as I could easily see Endgame topping it, I would say we see this finishing near Titanic or even higher. Again we have to see how the second weekend does and how big the drop will be. For now, we're expecting a second weekend drop of 50-60%.

Moving on from Endgame but still on Marvel news, Captain Marvel went up to 2nd place earning an estimated $8.05M this weekend (Down about 11%) bringing it's domestic total to $413M surpassing the domestic totals of Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3. Seems like the Endgame hype helped with this movie's legs either way it's a huge achievement. Some didn't even think it would get this high so this alone is impressive. I'm honestly shocked in some ways it held so well but not surprised at the same time, either way it seems to be having legs similar to Black Panther (Similar situation as BP was still playing by the time IW came out). This one might have a chance to finish around $418M-$430M domestic. Impressive performance.

Now onto the other movies. To start off, almost every movie this weekend suffered huge drops thanks to Endgame so these drops might be alarming. In 3rd place, The Curse Of Llorona dropped a whopping 71% with $7.5M estimate. Yikes! Either way the domestic total is around $41M so it should still finish with around $50M. The film will still be a profit for WB due to the low budget so this movie is beyond fine. Wouldn't worry too much.

In 4th place, Breakthrough dropped 44% which is an ok drop considering. The film had an estimate of $6.30M this weekend bringing it's domestic total to $26M.

In 5th place, Shazam dropped 66% with $5.52M bringing it's estimate total to $131M domestic. Now before anyone calls this a bomb, I'd like to say that this movie is still doing fine as last weekend's small drop short of made up for a big drop this weekend. Shazam will still be profitable people as it's already made well over $340M worldwide and should finish with around $140M-$150M domestically. Sure it's below our predictions but we overpredicted and honestly this movie is doing fine. Every movie seemed to suffer big drops this weekend due to the obvious, so this drop is not a huge surprise. Overall, Shazam is still doing fine. Now with that said let's move on.

Outside the Top 5, we saw more huge drops for movies as Hellboy continued it's hellish run dropping a awful 91% with only $355K this weekend in 14th place. This movie's box office is such a disaster like yikes. The film now has grossed over $21M domestic and it's safe to say this is probably one of the flops of 2019. Yikes. Additionally, After took a big tumble as well dropping 82% with an estimate of $425K.

Marvel/Disney

There you have it, Endgame pretty much dominated the weekend, hitting several new records in the process and also destroying other movies playing. Didn't see that coming/s. Either way this weekend has been interesting to track for sure and who knows what the ceiling for Endgame is as of now. That opening weekend number is still.........insane to me and my respect goes to all those who were brave enough to go out and go see this or those who had to work at a theater this weekend because that was probably absolute hell. Probably more hell than Hellboy's box office.

Are You Just As Shocked By We Are By Endgame's Opening?
