Weekend Box Office: La Llorona takes the #1 Spot

WB

We have a new #1 champ this weekend as "The Curse Of La Llorona" grossed an estimated total of $26.51M during this Easter weekend. The film set within The Conjuring Universe got off to a solid start and actually seemed to over perform people's expectations as some predicted a weekend total between $16M-$17M so this is a solid win for WB. We see this finishing anywhere from a $50M-$60M domestic total as horror movies usually have bigger second weekend drops and with the looming hype of Endgame coming next week, we could see this having a solid drop next week. However the film cost like $9M to make to it's already profitable.

In 2nd place after spending 2 weeks at #1, Shazam! grossed an estimated $17.34M this weekend bringing it's domestic total to $121.34M, only dropping 29%. The film actually held really solid throughout the week and is still headed in good shape for a solid domestic total. I know people think Endgame will destroy it's legs and while it's screen count will be effected, I still think this could reach $150M with a small chance at $160M. It's holding really well and should be another profit for WB.

In 3rd place, we have the new faith film, Breakthrough which is based on a true story. The film grossed a solid total of $11.10M this weekend bringing it's total to $14.61M (The film opened Wednesday). Overall really good start and a perfect time to release this movie during the Easter holiday weekend. Smart move on Fox's part.

It seems that the Avengers hype is indeed helping Captain Marvel because the film grossed a total of $9.10M this weekend bringing it's domestic total to over $400M! Yes this is absolutely insane and we will write a standalone article discussing the film's success and how Endgame potentially helped with the film's late legs. Very impressive number and once again yet another huge milestone for Marvel. At this rate Captain Marvel might dethrone Civil War and Iron Man 3's domestic totals. The film finished in 4th place this weekend.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Little which dropped to #5 place with $8.45M this weekend bringing it's domestic total to over $29.38M. This should finish somewhere in the $40M-$50M range.

Outside the Top 5, Hellboy well as expected plunged 67% with a total of $3.88M bringing it's domestic total to $19.68M which is not great. We don't even know if this will come close to $30M but it has a slim chance I guess although by next weekend, we wouldn't be surprised if half the theaters ditch this due to the amount of screens Endgame is going to take up. Theaters will obviously keep some movies but Hellboy will probably be one of the first on their lists of movies to drop. Meanwhile, Disney's Penguins grossed $2.35M bringing it's domestic total to $3.30M as like Breakthrough, it also opened on Wednesday. Seems like no one cared about that one, maybe Disney should put future documentary's on their Disney Plus service. In other Disney related news, Dumbo finally crossed the $100M mark as it grossed a total of $6.80M this weekend. Still a terrible number considering the film's ridiculous budget but hey it's better than nothing right?

Next weekend looks to pretty much be full of Endgame news obviously. The hype is there, tickets are apparently sold out to the point people are reselling tickets online, beware of potential spoiler leaks (We will NOT be posting any spoilers, so don't worry), and stay tuned as we will try to report as much Avengers news next week as possible. Should be interesting.

Happy Easter!
